Joseph Conrad: Heart of Darkness

The book opens with a man named Marlow, and this man has a dream and his dream is to conquer the Congo river. He wanted more than to conquer the river but he wanted the stories that came form it. The whole book is based on a STORY Marlow was telling from his time on the Congo. Ever since Marlow was little he wanted to set out on the water, not for the experience but for the story's he could pull them. Marlow achieve his goal and when he got older he set sail, and his most important story came from the Congo river. Marlow use the river to show how dark and unhappy on can be.

.............. The Heart of Darkness was not my favorite book at all. It was very hard for me to even finish, do to the fact I didn't enjoy it one bit. On the other hand the book was a little tough to follow and a bit harder reading. Another note is that I found it hard for me to make connections. I did my best to annotate the book but in the end it did nothing for me.

  1. I think this is fine considering your feelings on the book. It's clear you missed a some important details, but we'll talk about them in class and look more closely at the language. This is perfectly acceptable at this point. It's not an easy book to struggle through, but it's important that you all have the opportunity to see some writing that is unfamiliar (and maybe a little painful?). :)
